Sepia Scenes/Window Views: Grand Old Building

This building is in the same town as the Ice Cream Parlour featured in the post below. Madison, NJ is about an hour north of me. I was there for an appointment and of course I had the camera with me.

The street was very busy since it was lunch time and one of the corners was closed for landscaping so it was hard to get all the angles I wanted but I did my best to convey a sense of the structure.

Sepia Scenes: Aren't They Lovely

I was going through some old photos and found these two. I took them at my cousin's wedding a couple of years ago.

The first is one of the flower girls in the hotel lobby. She was waiting for the bride by counting tiles.



The second is one of the guests. I love the way she's standing. She reminded me of a Coco Chanel model. Totally oblivious to how very lovely and graceful she is.

This house is amazing to me. I just discovered it while getting lost trying to find a movie theater to get advance tickets for the first Harry Potter show for my nieces.

It's hard to get a good angle on the house. Very busy street. Active driveway across from it. Church next door. Tons of overhead wires and overgrown trees.

Yet I like what I did capture ...





I thought the sepia might bring out the details, the blue is distracting ...





I'm adding this because it reminds me of The Munsters ...

There is a small patch of paving blocks in my back yard. They are all that's left of the original back walkway and side patio.

I think they're beautiful. We power washed them and stabilized the few that were loose.

So many people are so eager to replace but I like a bit of history and character.

I thought this shot was suited to both SEPIA SCENES and WINDOW VIEWS



I pass this building often. I love its rounded front and all the windows. The bay is right down there on the right of the shot, less than a block away. Sometimes when the light and angle is just right you can see reflections of the water or clouds in the windows. I have tried to capture that but parking is impossible. I circle and circle the block hoping to capture a moment but eventually I think I look like a security threat so I give up.

I'm going to do it one of these days!!

Update: Several people mentioned in comments that sepia didn't suit this photo so I decided to post the original to show the difference. This is straight out of the camera, no editing at all.
I appreciate the feedback since sepia treatment is something I have trouble with.

Sepia Scenes: The Tree

I love the shape of this tree, it reminds me of an old soul, bent but not broken. And I love how it hangs over the walk, I get such a kick out of watching people try to skirt around it or under it. That makes the tree even more endearing to me - it is holding its ground and demanding respect.

Sepia Scenes: Poor Little Gazebo

This little gazebo is behind some pretty pricey condos and next to a very large, very expensive home. It faces the beach.

Its roof is falling over and the weed and brush surrounding it is so high and dense that I couldn't get close enough to see what state the rest of it is in.


I hope the owners are simply waiting for the spring to take care of this. It's a pretty little structure and should be cared for.

One other odd thing - all those windows have plain ugly shades blocking them. It's a beautiful day and you face the beach, why would you cover your windows like that?

People are strange.

Sepia Scenes & Creative Photography: At the Party

These are a few scenes from the Birthday Party in Brooklyn that I attended this past Sunday. I picked those that lent themselves to SEPIA SCENES.

There can never be too much food ... This is the cocktail hour station that included a brick oven where any pizza with any topping was made for you - right in front of your eyes.


The main room leads out to a deck. During the summer there are colorful fountains and masses of flowers out on the deck. This party was limited to immediate family and friends - so there were only 10 tables like this - not counting the head table. And that floor was made for dancing.


Each room has skylights. Some with chandeliers.


If the amazing food and music and company wasn't enough - there was a giant party favor box for each guest. I'll open it and post a photo another day. It's fun to wonder what's in there for a few days.

Sepia Scenes: A Rose By Any Other Color ...

This is another rose from the same arrangement as the red rose in the Ruby Tuesday post below. I included the original too - I don't really like the 'too peachy' color of the original.
