Sepia Scenes: Light Up the Street

I like the way the sun was shining off these fixtures above a local hardware store.

SEPIA SCENES

Update: Several people mentioned in comments that sepia didn't suit this photo so I decided to post the original to show the difference. This is straight out of the camera, no editing at all.
I appreciate the feedback since sepia treatment is something I have trouble with.

What an interesting photograph...The sepia just makes it even more 'detailed'...very kewl.

Oh, and I got somethin' for ya over at my place...

LOL! Okay... I just read Mo's comment and it is almost exactly the opposite of what I was thinking... hm.

I was thinking that I'm not sure sepia is the way to go on this shot -- because it seems to sort of all wash together. Too busy maybe? But perhaps Mo might be right! If I saw the original, it might be that sepia clears it up a bit. I wonder...

What were YOUR thoughts on this sepia?

It does show the glow on the light fixtures very well!

I love the perspective and the shadows in this as well Dianne!
And, the bits of the building's architecture that are more pronounced by the sepia.

Gotta say while I love the photo, I dont think sepia does it justice ... but that's just my opinion ... xo

I like it..and I really like the lights ;)
I like that's it's a crazy mish-mash of lights and wires and tree branches - cuz that's what life is...it's not pretty and tidy even though that's what we might wish for.
By going sepia with it you've taken away the definition of the conflicting elements.
Duuude...I'm so deep today.

Interesting. They are light fixtures, aren't they? At first I thought they must hold an awning of some kind. Nicely done.

mo - thanks :)
I'll be by to visit soon

melli - the original shot is on my laptop - I'm going to update the post later with it - you make some good points - I love the feedback
sepia is proving very difficult for me - I'm never sure what best suited by sepia and I'm never pleased with how pink/too light some shots come out or how too dark/bronze others come out

kahshe - that's what first attracted me to it - I usually forget to look up ;)

carletta - thanks :)
I wanted to get the full row but I couldn't back up any further

daryl - I'm going to post the original - hope you check back since I love the feedback - I'm never sure about sepia - my eye fogs over ;)

shelly - you ARE deep today and that IS exactly what I was going for lololololol!!!!
I do love the mish mash too - I wish I could have gotten other perspectives but there is too much traffic in the street and then an active driveway and a wall so I had to snap and run

bobbie - they are light fixtures - the store has a ton of bronze and copper in the window - I guess it's their specialty

These sepia pictures are so neat. I started seeing them at Melli's and now they are all over the place. Yours was sort of difficult to determine which way is up...but I have that problem frequently. :)

The sunlight is really pretty in this photo, and some interesting shapes too.

Thats a very cool subject for a sepia. I love it!

Personally I like the sepia (it's loads better than any sepia photo I've taken!). It gives it more of a timeless feel than the original, I think.

I like the colors in the original, but I have to say, I really do like the sepia one very much. It is very eye catching
Thanks for coming and wishing me a happy blogversary! Daryl is so awesome :)

I too prefer the non-sepia shot (very nice). Difficult to explain why though. maybe because the contrast between the lamps and the rest disappears ansd the contrast is effective in this particular shot.

The sepia ages the original quite nicely. The light fixtures and general ambiance look as if they could have been could be from a century ago. Sepia makes the photo sort of lost in time, and itself 100 years ago. Nice!

I generally stick to shots that don't include "modern" subjects for sepia myself. This one? Well, I probably wouldn't have toned it but that doesn't make it "wrong". It's got an element of antiquity to it that isn't entirely inappropriate, but if I were making the decision for myself, I'd probably turn to black & white before sepia. That's one guy's opinion though, and you know the line about those.

Thank you for uploading the original photo as well. It gives a great comparison. I think bronze items are really suited for sepia. It kind of adds them an antique value. Best wishes.

This is the kind of photo where knowing how to use PhotoShop to get the right sepia, like what Mary knows how to do, really comes in handy. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

The blue backdrop in your straight out of the camera shot works well to enhance the lamps importance.

I like the sepia shot too as it gives a "times past" feeling to it. I am taken back to childhood memories of the old outdoor shopping centers in my city. Maybe if the lamps had more contrast in the sepia photo to give them more weight?

Whereas I like both pictures, I've got to say that I like the original better simply because I like the colors of the lights which is something you can't see in the sepia.

I have issues with black & white sometimes myself as I get torn between whether a picture looks better in b&w or in color. I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder when you get right down to it, right?

I'm sure the lights lite up pretty nicely in the night :)
That's a lot of details in one picture for sure.

Thanks for posting the second photo, Dianne, as I was having trouble figuring out the sepia one.

Feedback is one of reasons I LOVE about blogging - I wish more of it was truthful. ;-) I don't want to be hit over the head with my mistakes but I DO want to know how I might improve. ;-)

I think if you like the sepia effect than that is what is important..if the sepia fits..wear it...lol...
