It LOOKS cold. It's very hard to take decent photos when you feel like your fingers are in danger of frost bite. I like the way you've caught the towers against the clouds as a backdrop. It all looks so futuristic, like on another planet.
Hadn't realized the Jump was built for the World's Fair. I always looked for it on the horizon when I'd go up to LI.
This goes on my list of "you learn something new every day" for today. :) After watching the movie Men in Black, I thought this was in Queens. Then, I read the write up by the NY Park Service, and I realize that I may have misunderstood. Neat! :)

I've never been to Coney Island. To me it's mythical. I always think of Woody Allen's movie Radio Days, where the family lived under the roller coaster on Coney Island! :D

jackie - yep! there were seats and you were strapped in and hoisted up and then dropped onto giant shock absorbers so that you'd bounce a bit
it was all done manually - I read it took 3 men for each person riding - no wonder they lost money
pagan - it's being preserved better although too many of the old structures are being knocked down for luxury apts
thankfully the parachute jump has been given landmark status

These structures offer a stylish utility you will not see these days, where function trumps style...not like the old days where great style was demanded in steel structures...
I've not been to Coney Island, but when I do, the Summer would be nice. And should I, it will be Nathan's for a delicious dog with mustard and a side of onion rings!

It does have sort of a "space age" feel to it, doesn't it? Like a 1960s person's concept of "mod". I remember it well, used to pass by there on the way to my cousin's house, long ago.
